Well-preserved medieval capital with Buddhist sculptures and monuments.
Polonnaruwa became the capital of Sri Lanka in the 11th century and flourished under kings such as Parakramabahu the Great. Its ruins are far better preserved than most ancient cities, and they sit peacefully among trees and the shores of the vast Parakrama Samudra reservoir. The whole area is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
