UNESCO World Heritage Site, ancient rock palace with frescoes.
Rising about 200 metres above the surrounding jungle, Sigiriya is the most dramatic sight in the Cultural Triangle. In the 5th century King Kashyapa built his palace on top of this giant rock, with royal gardens, ponds and fortified walls spread out below it. Today it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the best-known landmarks in Sri Lanka.
Highlights
- The Lion’s Paw gateway, where the final stairway to the summit begins
- The ancient frescoes of the celestial maidens and the polished Mirror Wall
- The summit ruins with wide views over forests and lakes
- The symmetrical water gardens at the foot of the rock
Travel tips
Start early in the morning, or come in the late afternoon, to avoid the heat and the crowds. The climb involves many steps, so wear comfortable shoes and bring water. For a sunset view of Sigiriya itself, the nearby Pidurangala Rock is a popular and quieter climb.
