Famous for elephants.
Udawalawe National Park is one of the best places in Sri Lanka to see wild elephants, often in large family herds that come to drink at the reservoir. The open grassland makes spotting animals easy, which suits first-time safari guests and families.
Highlights
- Herds of wild elephants close to the jeep track
- Water buffalo, crocodiles, deer and many birds
- The Elephant Transit Home, which cares for orphaned calves before returning them to the wild
Travel tips
Morning safaris are cooler and quieter. Bring a hat, sunscreen and water. The park is on the road between the hill country and the south coast, so it fits well into a longer journey.
