Less crowded, great for birdwatching and leopards.
Wilpattu is the largest national park in Sri Lanka, famous for its natural lakes known as villus. Quieter than Yala, it offers a more peaceful safari with forest tracks, sandy plains and shining lakes. It is known for leopards, sloth bears, elephants and many kinds of birds.
Highlights
- Jeep safaris along tracks that circle the villus
- Leopard and sloth bear sightings
- Excellent birdwatching around the lakes
Travel tips
The park is large, so a full day gives the best chance of wildlife. Start early, bring snacks and water, and wear neutral colours. It is an easy stop on the way between Colombo and Anuradhapura.
