Yala is the most famous national park in Sri Lanka and one of the best places in the world to see leopards in the wild. Dry forest, lagoons and rocky outcrops are home to elephants, sloth bears, crocodiles, deer and hundreds of bird species.

Travel tips
Safaris start at dawn, when animals are most active. Wear neutral colours, bring a hat and binoculars, and keep quiet in the jeep. Parts of the park can close for a period in the dry season, so check before you travel. Sightings are never guaranteed, but the park is rewarding at any time.
